Directed by Victor Halperin
If you are looking for amazing acting, don’t watch this film. If you are looking for stunning pyrotechnics, don’t watch this film. If you are looking to get scared, don’t watch this film. However if you are interested in the zombie phenomenon in film, want to watch Bela Lugosi ham it up, or if you are interested in Ed Wood at all, then definitely watch this film.
Bela Lugosi plays a man named Murder and he tricks a rich fellow into finding him a woman that he could control. This rich fellow tricks this woman who he meets on the boat to Haiti into being married at his mansion. Now come on, who would just meet this person and decide fuck it! I am going to get married to my sweetheart in his mansion then send him off to be a stock broker for this guy in New York City while I keep house for him in Haiti? Apparently this woman did not doubt it. Of course there is the contrast between light and dark, between the wise doctor and the naive young man, and fake movie lore.
This film is considered the first zombie film ever made. These zombies do not quite look like they have come to look. Mainly they look like men but with dead eyes. Bela controls them with his eyebrows. I mean he controls them with his grip that is just as ridiculous as his eyebrows.
This film is not amazing, but I think it is worth the one hour it takes to watch this film just for Bela.
